Day 22

From Missoula to Wisdom, Montana - Part 2

<< avant / before

         after /  après >>

While preparing for this trip, we read part of the reports of a similar journey called "American frontiers". Two groups of people, one heading north from the Mexican border, the other going south from the Canadian border, met in Utah after travelling across the USA using only public lands. Paticipants to that journey were just as impressed with the scenery as we are. Just like us, what they found fantastic at the beginning of the trip was quickly replaced by something even more spectacular. One of the participants then invented a new expression to describe what he saw everyday. He said it was "routinely beautiful"...

We now know exactly what he was talking about.

It is the diversity of scenery that we find most impressing. So, here's in pictures, what we can see in one day of travelling (and believe us, photos don't pay justice to the real thing...).

A picture is worth 1000 words!

Yeah ! Top 3 most scenic sections we've ridden
Yeah ! No. 3 "Thompson River rd" ( FR 556, Between US 2 and Thompson Falls) About 45 miles along Thompson river with numerous camping spots on the river.

No. 2 FR 301, (Between St-Joe river and FR 201, Idaho). 10 miles in a canyon along the creek. Short but Oh! so sweet!!

No. 1 Rock Creek rd (East of Missoula Montana, FR 102 south between I 90 and 38). 40 miles of trail/road in a continously changing and fabulous decor.

Bof... Rain...
Bof... Guess we should'nt complain about it, but we still do...

Surprise!

Remember when we said lookout towers were'nt used anymore to spot forest fires? Well, guess we kinda lied to you a little bit about that...

Seems many of those towers are still in operation today. Here's the tower at Tee Pee Point (Bitteroot Natl. For.).

For the last 21 years, Brenda spens all her summers in one of those towers. In fact, she's there 6 days a week. In constant radio contact with firefighter teams, she watches the horizon to give them all the necessary infos in case a fire should develop.

It's nice to chat with someone that knows her job so well. Thanks brenda, for your patience. We had 1001 questions.

Oh, Oh.... Speaking of watching the horizon. Big, threathening clouds are moving in our direction...

We quickly set the table up under the tarp. It's the first time we have to eat under a rainy sky.
